چکیده

We consider the credibility, persuasiveness, and informativeness of multidimensional cheap talk by an expert to a decision maker. We find that an expert with state-independent preferences can always make credible comparative statements that trade off the expert’s incentive to exaggerate on each dimension. Such communication benefits the expert – cheap talk is “persuasive” – if her preferences are quasiconvex. Communication benefits a decision maker by allowing for a more informed decision, but strategic interactions between multiple decision makers can reverse this gain. We apply these results to topics including product recommendations, voting, auction disclosure, and advertising. JEL: D82, L15, C72, D72, M31

Multistage Communication with and without Verifiable Types

We survey the main results on strategic information transmission, which is often referred to as ”persuasion” when types are verifiable and as ”cheap talk” when they are not. In the simplest model, an informed player sends a single message to a receiver who makes a decision. The players’utilities depend on the sender’s information and the receiver’s decision, but not on the sender’s message. Fur...

Tailored Cheap Talk∗

We consider a cheap-talk setting in which the sender can use information about the receiver’s preferences to tailor communication. Better information increases the persuasion ability of the sender, but also results in receiver skepticism. When the sender’s motives are transparent to the receiver, trade always relies on the sender not being too well-informed about the receiver’s preferences. In ...

Persuasive Puffery

Sellers often make explicit or implicit product claims without providing evidence. Even when such “puffery” is pure cheap talk, we find it can be credible and help buyers make a better decision. Talking up one attribute of a product leads rational buyers to have a better impression of the product on that attribute, but also to have a worse impression of the product on other attributes. Such upd...

Information Transmission with Cheap and Almost-Cheap Talk∗

Communication in practice typically occurs through multiple channels, not all of which permit costless misrepresentation of private information. Accordingly, I study a model of strategic information transmission based on Crawford and Sobel (1982), but allow for communication through both cheap talk and messages on a second dimension where misreporting is costly. Using a forward-induction refine...

Equilibrium selection in experimental cheap talk games

In the past, many refinements have been proposed to select equilibria in cheap talk games. Usually, these refinements were motivated by a discussion of how rational agents would reason in some particular cheap talk games. In this paper, we propose a new refinement and stability measure that is intended to predict actual behavior in a wide range of cheap talk games. According to our Average Cred...
